Nicholas Dare is a set and costume designer working in theatre and film. He most recently worked as Production Designer on Down Under, a feature directed by Abe Forsythe for Riot Films to be released this year. He was Art Director on The Dressmaker and set designer on Warner Bros. Picture San Andreas (director: Brad Peyton), Unbroken for Universal Pictures (director: Angelina Jolie) and the Miramax Film Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (director: Troy Nixey).
Nick designed the recent new musical B Girl starring Iota for an Opera House premiere and also worked with Global Creatures as a Design Associate on How To Train Your Dragon and King Kong as well as Associate Designer for both the West End and Australian runs of the mega-musical Priscilla, The Musical.
A 2001 NIDA Design graduate, Nicholas’ design credits include The Pillowman (sets only Company B Belvoir) for which he was nominated for a Sydney Theatre Award, Lovesong (MTC), the run away hit Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Showtune Productions), Honour Bound, directed by Nigel Jameson for Sydney Opera House, The Louis Nowra trilogy, The Emperor of Sydney, The Marvellous Boy and The Woman With Dog’s Eyes (Griffin Theatre Co), and Halpern and Johnson, Trying, They’re Playing Our Song, Mary Stuart and Losing Louis (Ensemble).
Nicholas co-produced and designed the successful independent productions of Edmond and Dealer’s Choice, both directed by Craig Illot. Nicholas has also art directed and production designed a number of short films and TVCs.
In 2010 Nicholas was the designer for the critically acclaimed Smoke and Mirrors performed for the Sydney Festival – and for many seasons since.
