Geoffrey Simpson is one of Australia’s most highly regarded cinematographers. A recipient of numerous accolades, he has won Australian Film Industry Awards for Oscar and Lucinda (1998), Shine (1996), The Navigator (1988) and was nominated for Sleeping Beauty (2011) The Tender Hook (2008) Romulus My Father (2007) and The Last Days Of Chez Nous (1992).
In 2014 Geoffrey worked with Chen Kaige on Kung Fu movie Monk Comes Down The Mountain, shot over 176 days in Beijing, Shanghai and southern China. In 2013 he worked with Kriv Stenders on Kill Me Three Times with Simon Pegg. Earlier that year, he shot My Mistress with Emmanuelle Beart and director Stephen Lance. Prior to this Geoffrey photographed The Sessions with Helen Hunt and John Hawkes, shot in the US and directed by Ben Lewin. This film won the Audience Award for Best Picture at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival
Other recent tiles include Satellite Boy, Sleeping Beauty, The Tender Hook for writer/director Jonathan Ogilvie and Romulus My Father for director Richard Roxburgh. His international feature credits include Under The Tuscan Sun, The Last Holiday, Life, Some Mother’s Son and Center Stage. Early work in the US includes Fried Green Tomatoes and The War for Jon Avnet, Anthony Minghella’s Mr Wonderful and Peter Weir’s Green Card.
He’s worked with director Gillian Armstrong numerous times on features such as Little Women, Oscar and Lucinda and The Last Days Of Chez Nous. He also shot Scott Hick’s Oscar-nominated Shine and Vincent Ward’s The Navigator.
Geoffrey recently completed work on Causeway Film’s much anticipated Cargo featuring Martin Freeman, and his second feature with Ben Lewin, Please Stand By starring Dakota Fanning.
